What is the Roof Shingle Calculator?

The Roofing Calculator is used by contractors and homeowners to estimate the total material required for a new roof. It converts the complex geometry of a roof's square footage into industry-standard "squares" and "bundles," ensuring accurate materials ordering and cost estimation.

How to Calculate Roofing Materials (Formulas)

The roofing industry operates on a measurement called a "Square," which has absolutely nothing to do with the physical shape of the roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is roof pitch and why does it matter?

Roof pitch is the steepness of the roof, measured as a ratio of vertical rise over a 12-inch horizontal run (e.g., a 4/12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every 12 inches it goes back). You cannot simply measure the square footage of your flat attic floor; a steeply pitched roof has significantly more surface area than a flat roof covering the exact same house footprint.

Do I need to tear off the old shingles first?

While some local building codes allow you to nail a second layer of new shingles directly over a single old layer (called a "layover"), it is highly discouraged. Layovers hide rotting plywood decking, void manufacturer warranties, and add thousands of pounds of massive structural weight to your roof trusses. A full tear-off is the only professional way to roof a house.

What is an ice and water shield?

Ice and water shield is a thick, rubberized, self-healing underlayment membrane. It is mandatory in cold climates. It is installed on the bottom 3 to 6 feet of the roof edge and inside the valleys to prevent melting snow (ice dams) from backing up underneath the shingles and rotting the drywall inside the house.
