What is the Cross Stitch Calculator?

The Cross Stitch Calculator helps crafters plan their projects by determining the final physical dimensions of a pattern based on the stitch count and the fabric's Aida count. It also calculates the total fabric cut size required for framing.

How to Calculate Cross Stitch Dimensions (Formulas)

The math relies on the "fabric count," which indicates how many stitches fit within one square inch of the fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 14-count Aida mean?

14-count Aida cloth is woven with a grid that allows for exactly 14 cross stitches per linear inch. A 100-stitch wide pattern stitched on 14-count Aida will be roughly 7.14 inches wide.

How much extra fabric margin should I leave?

It is standard practice to leave at least 2 to 3 inches of blank fabric on all four sides of the design. This extra margin is critical; it gives you fabric to hold in a hoop or Q-snap while stitching, and provides the necessary material for stretching and lacing the finished piece over a mounting board for framing.

What happens if I use a higher count fabric?

If you take the exact same pattern and stitch it on 18-count Aida instead of 14-count, the final physical design will be significantly smaller and the stitches will be packed much tighter together. This often results in a higher-resolution, "pixel-dense" look.
